Newsletter for Base Dreams Sept 2006 - KL

16/9/06

Hello everyone out there in base jump land. I would just like to apologize to you all on yet another tragic situation that has occurred in between me writing 2 of the latest news letters and the fatal accident of yet another team member and friend Adam Gibson. I have had both of these news letters written for a long time but somehow they never made it into your inboxes due to a communication issue. I am still sending them to you even though it doesn't seem very tasteful in this sad time because Adam would want me to. We have had an amazing summer this year and without these 2 tragic accidents it would have been the best ever, so I feel that I should continue to share with you the good times so as we do not just keep dwelling on the bad. I apologize if this offends anyone.

I have written a report on the accident that will be put on dropzone.com in the base forum for anyone that is interested in my view of what happened.

Be safe everyone and live hard Douggs

KL newsletter for base dreams 2006 ...

And so it was that time of year again. Just like the leaves start falling off the trees it was time for me to start falling from buildings in the awesome country of KL, Malaysia. It was also time to see my girlfriend Jackie again after 4 months of travelling and a few days of living it up in style. A fancy hotel and more buffet dinners and breakfasts than you can poke a stick at were on the agenda as we had 3 days of chilling out before the 10 anniversary of KL tower and the 3 day base jumping event.

The buffets were so good that I actually ended up getting sick of them and sick as a dog as well. There was every food type that you could imagine from prawns and sushi to a whole roast lamb, to an array of Malaysian and other Asian dishes. And the deserts were killer with the highlight being a massive chocolate fountain in which you could chocolate coat anything you wanted, it was like something out of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. It was lucky I wasn't drunk at the chocolate fountain cause I would have chocolate coated my knob for sure ha ha.

We also spent a day with Paul Feegan and the Germans in the Genting Highlands and Malaysia's own wind tunnel. It might not be as big as the ones in the USA but it was way cheaper and at only $8- aud a minute we bought an hour of fun and craziness.

They completely let us run amuck and we were soon bouncing off the walls as we attempted anything and everything. Jackie was ripping it up on her back and we did a cool 2 way on our bellies before trying a 4 way in which we didn't quite have the room to move. We were all doing some cool back flying and a little sit flying with a lot of flips and out of control ness in between. As usual in true Malaysian style nothing was organized until the last minute although everything looked pretty smooth on the surface for a change.

continued top right...

continued from below..

I thought there would be more carnage this year with so many jumpers but everyone seemed to start off quite conservative and work there way into chaos which was quite cool. All sorts of jumps were getting done from flat and stables to flag jumps to people getting thrown off and a couple of Aussie 4 way stars which were pulled off to Aussie perfection. I had a fat time myself doing all types of stuff from filming cool shit to doing my first misty flips and linked gainers. I also jumped my pimp daddy yellow suit for some cool photos.

Unfortunately though there was some carnage with Brandy from the U.S.A. coming off second best with a water tank, (hope you get well soon buddy) and Ludo from Belgium getting knocked unconscious on a tower strike and several other people hitting the tower but flying away safely. Jackie was kept well busy over the 3 days taking photos and video of all the lads ripping it up and dealing with all the other photographers hassling her (a big fuck you to that French photographer) Thanks heaps to Jackie from all the jumpers for those great photos.

I had to deal with a pretty bad case of food poisoning on the 2nd and 3rd day but managed to power through and do a few jumps and then fall into a heap of a night time. Its not often I miss an end of event party but this stomach bug kicked my arse so I left it up to Jackie to party for the both of us as I snuk off to bed way too early. It sounded like they all partied pretty hard as they were well hung over when we went to the airport the next day.

Overall the event was a great success and wouldn't be made possible without the help of Aziz and Gary Cunningham, thanks heaps guys. Next years event in KL has already been announced so we wait now one more year until the fun happens again. I'm sitting in LAX now waiting for my flight to Mormon central other wise known as Salt Lake City where the crew all meets up again for the final leg of the journey in the United Mistakes of America Its gunna be fun yawl !!! Squeal like a what, officer ha ha

So until next time remember this ... "The key to longevity in base jumping is to always doubt your own ability." - Tedd Rudd.

Big hugs my friends Shine on Douggs
